The Maipo River Wetland is home to more than 132 species of migratory and resident birds which use the calm waters of the Maipo, nearby scrubland and bushes, dunes and the beach, as refuge, resting, nesting and feeding sites.

Based on the census conducted by the Ornithologists’ Association of Chile, a total of 132 bird species can be observed in the estuary of the Maipo River, accounting for more than 27% of the country’s bird fauna. Every year, 21 migratory species fly to this estuary from the northern hemisphere. This site has the largest bird diversity and abundance in the entire central coast according to Chile’s National Environmental Commission (CONAMA).
